Uyuni

Thursday 3rd July

It´s a strange feeling for me to arrive in a town by train...

Uyuni is another busy market town spoiled by a million tour operators touting for business. The salt flat tour dominates everything. It´s a far cry from Chile and Argentina where business seems to be secondary to mate and siesta. Here the pursuit of the dollar is king, and vendors compete for attention. Haggling opportunities abound! It´s hard buiness... but Bolivian style - all smiles and friendliness and it´s impossible to feel threatened.

The clock tower divides the gringos from the town proper...

One side of the street there´s the plaza, white faces and restaurants charging 80 bolivianos for a pizza, the other is colourful south america, the market and restaurants charging 10 bolivianos...

We hit the chaos to load up on essentials for the ride out to the Salar de Uyuni in the morning...
